URBAN VIEWS

This work reflects my investigations of the geometry and architecture of the abandoned buildings in Northern Liberties, Kensington and Port Richmond which exist in the lower part of North Philadelphia. These neighborhoods contain many handsome structures which once provided a livelihood for the people of the area. Many of the buildings are empty, falling into disrepair, disintegrating or being demolished for gentrification. They still maintain a powerful image which draws me to them. My interest is not in accurate perspective or realistic color but rather an Expressionistic statement with some reference to the Precisionist works of Sheeler, Demuth, Crawford and Elsie Driggs.

I recently expanded my sources to include the huge Bethlehem Steel plant, which is being dismantled, and the recently closed Henry Weinhard Brewery in Portland, Oregon. There appears to be no dearth of subject matter in US cities as our economy moves from manufacturing to service.
